Take good care of your cells

You don't see them, you don't hear them, you don't feel them, but still they determine what you look like and whether you're healthy. Your cells are the building blocks of your body. But what do they need to function well and what can we do to keep our cells as healthy as possible?

Our body consists of about 37,2 trillion cells. You might think in cells of some kind of Lego, that stay in the same place all the time. But that's where you're wrong. A person renews himself continuously. On cellular level, we are a completely different human every three months. So, cells are continuously moving. How this cell renewal works, is partly determined by the biology of our cells. But also the way you live, excercise, eat and relax will influence the health of your cells.

All chemical reactions in the cells together are called cell metabolism. The main purpose of cell metabolism, is to produce energy. Every cell has a power plant. These are called the mitochondria. The power plants ensure the conversion of nutrients such as sugar, fats and proteins into all kinds of chemicals.

ATP is such a chemical and one of the most important sources of energy, which takes care of reactions in the cells. Without energy, the cells can't work, because this allows them to deliver labor. For example, a neuron can cause contraction of a muscle and exercise muscle power.

It is therefore important that those cells are always able to function well. Food plays a big role in this. The combustion and build-up of cells goes on continuously, just not at the same pace. If you jog, for example, more energy should be produced than when you lay down on the couch. That's why it's also so important that you ingest enough nutrients to continue to renew and restore the cells. Your lifestyle is playing an important role here. Can you feed the cells in your body? Yes! Choose healthy foods. A beautiful directive with this is the Mediterranean diet: eat masses of vegetables, lots of fruit, fish, a large portion of legumes and healthy fats such as olive oil.

Also good for your cells: go into the sun. More and more chronic disorders are linked to a deficiency of vitamin D. Vitamin D is an engine that keeps your body in action on cellular level. Another engine for your cells is excercise. So excercise at least thirty minutes every day. But also take care of much needed relaxation. Stress can cause damage to your cells at DNA level. Prevent it by channelling stress in its own way. Whether it's via yoga or mindfulness, kickboxing or painting - for your cells it's important that you find a way of relaxing that suits you.

Even though you may excercise enough, you eat healthy and take enough rest, there are always influences on our body that we don't have under control.
